PDF Text Looks Blurry? How to Fix It

The most common cause is that the PDF is scanned at low resolution. When a paper document is scanned at 150 DPI or less, text appears fuzzy because there are not enough pixels to render sharp letterforms. Over-compression is another culprit. Aggressive JPEG compression applied to scanned pages or PDF optimization that reduces image quality too much will degrade text clarity. Font rendering issues can also cause blurriness, particularly when fonts are not embedded and the viewer substitutes a different font. PDFs created from low-quality screenshots or screen captures will have blurry text because screen resolution is typically 72-96 DPI, far below what is needed for crisp text.

If the source document is available, recreate the PDF with higher quality settings. For scanned documents, rescan at 300 DPI or higher with a clean, flat original. If rescanning is not possible, you can try running OCR on the blurry scan. OCR recognizes the text and creates a clean text layer, though the underlying image will remain blurry. For PDFs that became blurry after compression, go back to the pre-compression version and compress with less aggressive settings. Make sure fonts are embedded when creating PDFs from Word or other office applications. If you are receiving blurry PDFs from others, ask the sender to export at higher quality or share the original source file.
